First things first, let me apologise for most things in the video – especially the trainers. BUT – definitely not the shorts. Would love to know where they are now!!
Taking a look back through my archives lead me to a video from 2008. As horrendously embarrassing as this video is, it allows me to reflect on where I have come from to where I am at now and a chance for guys that are new to training to realise we too have to start somewhere.
This video was taken in my back garden demonstrating some awfully executed deadlifts. There might be 50-60kg on the bar. With form like that, i’m glad there was not any more weight on it.
What can I take from this video?
- The height of the bar doesn’t allow for a good set up to execute the lift
- Therefore it is likely that my stance is wider to get lower
- My lower back starts the lift slightly flexed and loses tension throughout
- That ‘dynamic’ warm up before hand certainly didn’t allow me to prep properly for deadlifting
- Coaching is vitally important – not just learning from other people as you inherit their poor form
This is why I am a huge advocate of training within a crossfit facility with good coaches and good people around you. Where I train and work, you would be pounced on within seconds to amend this style of lift. The warm up would be different. The set up, the execution- all would be different.
This is turn will increase the amount we progress and decrease the chances of injury.
How many of us that started off in a normal gym learnt lifting from the guy who was there before us?
If you’re new to this and you start off in a crossfit facility, you will be in good hands and will be coached properly.
Enjoy the video 😉
