Hip Pain Treatment

Hip Pain
Treatment

Help for hip bursitis, hip arthritis, gluteal tendinopathy, hip flexor strains and more. We assess what's going on and help you get back to moving freely.

Why Injury Active

A strength-based approach to hip pain

Hip pain is common at every age, from active young adults with hip flexor strains to older adults managing hip arthritis.

Our physiotherapists and sports therapists take a thorough approach to working out what's driving your hip pain. Then we build a plan that combines hands-on treatment with progressive strength work, so you're not just easing symptoms but building capacity.

Common Causes

What's causing your hip pain?

Hip pain has many possible causes. A proper assessment is the first step to choosing the right approach.

Hip Bursitis

Irritation of the bursa on the outside of the hip, causing pain that is worse with walking, stairs or lying on that side.

Gluteal Tendinopathy

Irritation of the gluteal tendons, causing deep pain on the outside of the hip that is worse with long spells of sitting, crossing your legs or standing on one leg.

Hip Osteoarthritis

Age-related changes in the hip joint that can cause groin pain, stiffness and reduced movement, especially in the morning or after sitting.

Hip Flexor Strain

A strain of the muscles at the front of the hip, causing pain in the front of the hip or groin when walking, running or lifting the knee.

Labral Tear

A tear in the ring of cartilage around the hip socket, which can cause deep groin pain, clicking or a feeling of instability.

Referred Pain From The Spine

Pain from the lower back or sacroiliac joint can be felt around the hip. A proper assessment helps tell the difference.

FAQs

Hip pain questions answered

What causes hip pain?
Hip pain can come from many sources, including bursitis, hip flexor strains, arthritis, labral tears, hip impingement, gluteal tendinopathy and pain referred from the lower back. A proper assessment helps us choose the right approach.
Can hip pain be managed without surgery?
Many people manage well without surgery, especially with hip bursitis, hip flexor strains, gluteal tendinopathy and mild to moderate hip arthritis. If we think you need imaging or a specialist opinion, we'll tell you and refer you to your GP.
Do you help older adults with hip pain?
Yes. Hip pain, including hip arthritis, is something we see often in people over 40. Our physiotherapists and sports therapists combine hands-on treatment with guided exercise to help you stay mobile and active.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You don't need a referral to book with our physiotherapists or sports therapists. If you have any of the warning signs listed on this page, please see your GP or seek urgent medical help first.

"Highly recommend for running-related issues. Jess put together a clear plan to get me ready for my marathon, and her communication was excellent throughout. Thank you!"

"Referred after an increasingly painful knee was impacting on my exercise. Hannah was very thorough in her investigation and analysis of the problem. I noticed a steady but sustained improvement following the recommended exercises over the first week. The exercises were subsequently changed up and the improvement sustained over the next two weeks. What definitely helped was the link between the Injury Active Clinic and the Barn. Hannah provided a briefing for the coaches, ensuring the gym sessions reinforced the recommended physio programme."
