How Every Member Starts

Five phases. One plan.

No one walks straight into a class. Every member goes through the same five phases, so your training is built around your body, your history and your goals from day one.

The Train With Pain Method

Our 5-phase system.

We don't just hand you a programme and leave you to it. Every member goes through our structured onboarding process to make sure your training is safe, effective and tailored to you. Watch how it works in 76 seconds.

Phase

01

Initial Consultation

Our goal isn't just to offer a service but to provide one that truly fits your needs. We take the time to understand your goals, expectations and current level, then build a personalised plan to help you get there.

Phase

02

In-Depth Assessment

A comprehensive 60-minute physical assessment that reviews your medical history, injury background and current limitations, so every training decision accounts for your full picture.

Phase

03

Nutrition

A nutrition conversation looks at how you are fuelling your training and recovery, and sets simple, sustainable habits that fit your week.

Phase

04

Rehab

Anything picked up in your assessment gets its own rehab plan, built and progressed by our clinical team, so you can train with confidence.

Phase

05

Small Group Training: Strength & Mobility

Coached small-group sessions with a maximum of 8 people, building your strength and mobility around your goals, with your coach watching your technique and progressing your load over time.

Why Our Gym

Not your average gym.

Our strength studio sits alongside our clinic in Bishop's Stortford. Because every member comes through our 5-phase system, your coach already knows your history before your first class. Coaches understand injury and rehab, so if your back flares up during the week, your coach and your sports therapist can talk to each other. It's a place to get strong, not just get through a workout.

FAQs

Common questions about the gym

Can I just drop in to a class?
No. Everyone starts at phase 1 of our 5-phase system: a consultation, then a 60-minute assessment, nutrition and any rehab you need. By the time you join a class, your coach already knows your history and your goals.
Do I need an injury to join?
Not at all. Plenty of our members just want to get strong and stay that way. The 5-phase system simply makes sure your training is built around you, whatever your starting point.
What happens in the assessment?
Phase 2 is a 60-minute physical assessment covering your medical history, injury background and how you move, so your programme accounts for your full picture.
How big are the classes?
A maximum of 8 people, so your coach can watch your technique and adjust your load.
When are classes?
Monday to Friday at our Bishop's Stortford studio. We do not run classes on Saturdays. See the online timetable for current times.

"Highly recommend for running-related issues. Jess put together a clear plan to get me ready for my marathon, and her communication was excellent throughout. Thank you!"

"Referred after an increasingly painful knee was impacting on my exercise. Hannah was very thorough in her investigation and analysis of the problem. I noticed a steady but sustained improvement following the recommended exercises over the first week. The exercises were subsequently changed up and the improvement sustained over the next two weeks. What definitely helped was the link between the Injury Active Clinic and the Barn. Hannah provided a briefing for the coaches, ensuring the gym sessions reinforced the recommended physio programme."

"Jess was so lovely and supportive throughout my time with her. She really helped build my confidence and get me back to doing the sports I love! I'm so grateful for all her help and would highly recommend :)"
