Knee Pain Treatment

Knee Pain
Treatment

Ligament injuries, runner's knee, arthritis, meniscus tears. We assess what's going on and build a rehab plan to help you get back to the things you enjoy.

Knee Rehabilitation

Strength-based knee rehab

Knee pain affects people of all ages, from young athletes with ligament injuries to older adults managing arthritis. The key is a proper assessment and a rehab programme that matches the cause, not just the symptoms.

Our physiotherapists and sports therapists combine hands-on treatment with progressive strength work. The aim is to help you move better, manage your pain and build the strength to keep doing what you love.

Common Causes

What's causing your knee pain?

Ligament Injury

Sprains or tears of the knee ligaments, such as the ACL or MCL. These are common in sports that involve pivoting, landing and changing direction.

Meniscus Tear

Damage to the cartilage discs inside the knee, which can cause pain, swelling, clicking and sometimes the knee catching or locking.

Patellofemoral Pain

Pain around or behind the kneecap, often called runner's knee. It is commonly linked to training load and strength around the hip and knee.

Patellar Tendinopathy

An overuse problem of the tendon below the kneecap, sometimes called jumper's knee. Common in people who run, jump or squat a lot.

IT Band Pain

Pain on the outside of the knee where the iliotibial band crosses it, often during running or cycling.

Knee Osteoarthritis

Age-related changes in the knee cartilage that can cause pain, stiffness and swelling. Many people find strength work helps them stay active.

FAQs

Knee pain questions answered

What causes knee pain?
Knee pain has many causes, including ligament injuries, meniscus tears, runner's knee, patellar tendinopathy, IT band pain, bursitis and arthritis. Each one is managed differently, so a proper assessment matters.
Can physiotherapy or sports therapy help with knee pain?
Many people find it helps. Our physiotherapists and sports therapists use hands-on treatment, taping and progressive exercise to help you move better and build the strength to support your knee. We also support rehab after knee surgery, working alongside the guidance from your surgical team.
Do I need surgery for my knee pain?
Many people manage well without surgery, including some with ligament and meniscus injuries. If we think you need imaging or a specialist opinion, we'll tell you and refer you to your GP.
How long does knee rehab take?
It depends on the injury and your goals. Some problems settle in weeks, while rehab after major knee surgery is a much longer process. We'll explain what to expect after your assessment and review your progress regularly.

"Highly recommend for running-related issues. Jess put together a clear plan to get me ready for my marathon, and her communication was excellent throughout. Thank you!"

"Referred after an increasingly painful knee was impacting on my exercise. Hannah was very thorough in her investigation and analysis of the problem. I noticed a steady but sustained improvement following the recommended exercises over the first week. The exercises were subsequently changed up and the improvement sustained over the next two weeks. What definitely helped was the link between the Injury Active Clinic and the Barn. Hannah provided a briefing for the coaches, ensuring the gym sessions reinforced the recommended physio programme."
